FAQs – What is DNS?
What is DNS?
DNS stands for Domain Name Service (or System)
The internet works with IP addresses. For example, this website is 184.108.40.206. With millions of websites on the World Wide Web it would be impossible to remember all of the site IP addresses. Combine this with servers and other computers that you might connect to and the number of IP addresses is huge.
It would be like trying to memorize the 500 contacts in your phone just by phone numbers, and not by name.
DNS allows you to assign a name to the IP address. So ScottGombar.com points to 220.127.116.11 and vice versa. It’s easier to remember ScottGombar.com, Google.com, Facebook.com or Instagram.com than it is to remember the IP addresses.
